Description
and Location.
The assessed group of objects is located on an island on Lake Ełk,
on the southern side of ul. Zamkowa, behind a high prison wall, in
the central part of town. The plot includes the castle building,
the former prison building, a storage building, a gate-house, and
a wall. The location of the plot and the buildings is shown on
Enclosures 1 and 2.

THE
CASTLE
BUILDING
The castle was built in the years 1398-1408 by Ulrich von
Jungingen. It was a Teutonic Knights castle located on an island
on Lake Ełk. The castle was renovated in 1497 after the 13 Years
War. The building was remodeled many times, and finally rebuilt as
a prison administration building at the end of the 19th century.
The castle lacks any characteristic features of a historical
style. It is a three-floor building with cellars and a usable
attic.
Materials and Construction.
- the cellar walls are built from full burnt brick and stone
- the walls above ground are built from full burnt brick on lime
mortar
- the ceilings over the cellars are built in the form of brick
arches
- the intermediate floors are ferro-concrete „Klein”
- the stairs leading from the ground floor to the II floor are
concrete
- the stairs leading from the II floor to the attic are detached,
cast-iron; they are damaged
- the roof of the wooden structure is covered with tar board; it
is damaged
- windows and doors lack woodwork
- the plaster on the inside walls has been torn down
- the plaster on the outside walls is concrete-lime with many
defects
- the terrace and entrance steps are concrete.
Information about the Building.
The building was built in the years 1398-1406. It was last rebuilt
at the end of the 19th century. In the eighties of the 20th
century, the building underwent partial renovation and adaptation
for the needs of a museum. It is built on the plan of a rectangle
with two breaks in the front wall.
The building is recorded in the register of architectural
monuments under the number WZK 534/844/91
from
12 September 1991.
The following renovation jobs have been performed:
- wooden ceilings have been exchanged for „Klein” concrete
ceilings
- the plaster on the inside walls has been torn down
- some of the internal walls have been newly built
- the area of the new staircase has been prepared
- dividing walls have been built in the attic, and walls and
ceiling have been insulated with „suprema”
- the wooden structure and the planking of the roof have been
repaired
- the roof has been covered with tar board.

Description
of the Present Condition of the Castle Building.
Cellars.
Part of the building possesses cellars.

Ground Floor, height 3.24 m.

- walls from full brick, plaster torn down - the condition of the
walls is good
- the ceilings above the ground floor are „Klein” concrete

Attic
- height 2.40 m.

Staircase.

The newly designed staircase is a space going the whole height of
the building, with walls from full brick, and capped with a ferro-concrete
ceiling above the level of the attic.
Outside
Walls.
The walls are covered with plaster. The façade
and the side walls have decorative plaster with ornamental strips
between the storeys, the south wall has smooth plaster. The
outside walls are damaged, the southern side lacks most of the
plaster, and the other walls have many defects. The doors and
windows lack woodwork.
FORMER
PRISON
BUILDING.
The building of the former prison was built around 1888. This
building, located on an island on
Lake Ełk, was used as a prison for women. It had this function
till the early eighties of this century. It is a three-floor
building with cellars and a usable attic.
Materials
and Construction.
- the cellar walls are built from full burnt brick and stone
- the walls above ground are built from full burnt brick on lime
mortar
- the ceilings over the cellars, and over all the corridors on all
the floors have the form of brick arches
- the intermediate floors are ferro-concrete „Klein”, the ceiling
over the II floor is wooden
- ferro-concrete stairs are located in the middle of the building
- the roof is
wooden, gabled, covered with ceramic pantile laid on full
planking, in very bad condition
- the roof over
the boiler house is flat, made from concrete, covered with tar
board
- windows and
doors lack woodwork, the walls still retain window frames and bars
- plaster on the inside walls has been torn down
- the storage building and the boiler house are covered with
smooth plaster
- the boiler house has steel doors and window frames
- the floors in the boiler house are concrete
- the boiler house has pre-fabricated channel ceilings
- the outside
plaster on the former prison building is concrete-lime, with many
defects
Information
about the Building.
The building was built around 1888. It is built on the plan of an
elongated rectangle. On the eastern side, at the gable end, a
boiler house and a storage building have been added.
The building has been recorded in the register of architectural
monuments under the number WZK 534/844/91
from 12 September 1991.
n the eighties of the 20th century, partial renovation and
adaptation for the needs of a museum was performed in the
building.

- the boiler house has been built, its walls plastered, the steel
window frames and doors installed

Description
of the Present Condition of the Former Prison Building.
Cellars.
There are cellars under part of the building.
- the floor is brick and concrete
- the walls and the brick ceiling are covered with plaster
Ground Floor - height 2.98 m.
- the floor is uneven concrete
- the walls are from full brick, the plaster is torn down. The
walls are in good condition.
- the ceilings over the ground floor are „Klein” concrete
- doors and windows lack woodwork, the old window frames and bars
are still in the walls

The newly designed staircase is a space going the whole height of
the building, with walls from full brick, and capped with a ferro-concrete
ceiling above the level of the attic.
Outside Walls.
The building is covered with decorative plaster with cornice
profiles. The condition of the outside walls is poor, there are
many defects in the plaster. The doors and windows lack woodwork.
THE BOILER HOUSE.
The boiler house was built in the eighties of this century. The
building forms a part of the former prison, as it has been
constructed as an annex to its eastern gable around the break. It
is a single-storey annex with a shed roof.
The construction of the building:
- the foundation walls are concrete
- the walls above ground are from chequer brick, full brick, and
gas concrete
- the central heating smoke-stack is from ceramic brick
- the ceiling is from channel slabs, insulated with mineral wool
and covered with tar board
- the floors have a concrete foundation laid on the ground
- the chutes and pipes are from zinc-coated sheets
- the window frames and doors are from steel
- the inside and outside walls are covered with concrete-lime
plaster
THE
STORAGE
BUILDING.
The storage building has loading platforms. The building stands
right next to the outside wall, close to the main entrance to the
plot. The ceiling is wooden, supported by wooden pillars, and
covered with tar board. The ceiling is in very bad condition, and
requires a major overhaul. The walls are from chequered brick,
full brick, and gas concrete. The windows have woodwork and bars.
The floors are wooden and concrete.
The building has four rooms.

Information.

Cubic capacity: 1,150.00 m3
The building has no historical value. In accordance with the
Białystok Design Office report from 1981, the above-mentioned
building is to be torn down, as it spoils the layout of the
representative part of the area, and also because the outer wall,
which is at the same time one of the building’s walls, will have
to be lowered.
Description of the Rooms.

THE
GATE-HOUSE.
This is a single-storey building without a cellar, built according
to traditional technology. Wooden roof covered with tar board. The
building has one room. The walls are built from ceramic brick,
plastered and painted. The floor is wooden, covered with a carpet.
The windows have double-pane woodwork. The door is wooden. The
building has electricity.

Information.
Building area: 11.60 m2
Usable area: 6.20 m2
The technical condition of the building is quite good.
According to the above-mentioned report, the gate-house is to be
torn down for the same reasons as the storage building.
OUTSIDE
WALL - BRICKWORK.
The wall surrounding the assessed real estate is made from ceramic
brick. The wall is 2.5 bricks thick. The wall is founded on stone,
and covered with two rows of ceramic tiles.
